Chapter 1: Awkward Introductions

A knock came in the middle of their impromptu meeting. "Now, who could that be?" Giles said with great annoyance. Giles opened the door and stood gaping in shock. "Hi, Giles," a distinctly female voice said from beyond the doorway. The Scooby Gang craned their necks, trying to see the woman that had put Giles in such a state of shock. Spike sat on the stairs, ignoring the curious twits making themselves look like idiots.

"What are you doing here? Where's your Watcher?" Giles finally managed to say, as a petite brunette stepped past him into the room. Everyone exchanged confused glances, while Spike watched the young woman take off her sunglasses ( even though it was dark out ) and turn back toward Giles.

"Dead," she answered grimly, sitting her bags down. Spike noticed she was quite a looker, with lots of graceful curves. 'Wouldn't mind having a shag on that.' Spike thought with an evil grin.

"You... You didn't...." Giles stammered.

"No a vamp got him before I could," she answered with a wicked smile.

"It's so good to see you," Giles said happily, as he grabbed her for a hug, finally over his surprise.

"Missed you too, Gilesy," she responded, hugging him back hard.

" Umm...Giles?" Buffy interrupted, "Want to introduce us to the other girl with a Watcher?"

Everyone else was to busy staring at Giles, to notice that Spike had a look of amazement on his face. 'It's her,' his mind screamed at him.

'She's real, you git, and standing right in front of you.' Spike was very rarely in awe but when she turned to look at everyone, that is the only word to describe what he felt.

"This is Serene," Giles said, "she's..."

"The Eternal Queen, the one who will bring darkness into the light." Spike interrupted, walking toward her.

"So shall she be born into Hell and become the Queen of the Night. All demons shall bow before her and look upon her as a god. The world will fall at the wave of her hand and she will reign in eternal darkness." Spike bowed before her and took her hand in his. "My Lady," he said quietly, gently kissing her hand. Serene smiled. 'Its kind of nice having a gorgeous guy fawn over me,' she thought, 'even if he's a vampire.'

"Get up, William, I'm not Queen yet and hopefully never will be." she said with a shade of annoyance in her voice.

He stood up and their eyes met, an intense wave of knowing ran through them both.

Chapter 2: Uncomfortable Explanations

"Giles, what is going on!" Buffy exclaimed.

"Serene, this is Buffy, the Slayer, and that's Willow and Xander," Giles said, ignoring Buffy's question while glaring at Spike. "You've already met Spike."

"Yeah," she said, glancing at Spike before turning toward the others. "Hi, all!" She graced them with a dazzling smile, as each returned her greeting.

"Giles..." Buffy started only to be interrupted as Giles stepped in.

"I'll explain everything in a moment, Buffy. Serene, would you like something to eat or drink?" Giles asked.

"Do you have any coffee or just that bloody english tea?" Serene replied. Spike snickered at her choice of words and settled himself back on the stairs.

"I think I've got some instant coffee," Giles said, smiling at her.

"Find a spot and make yourself comfortable." 'Like on my lap,' Spike thought, surprising himself with the mage of it. Bloody Hell, she's human, so why does that thought sound so good? Why am I even thinking it in the first place?'

Serene shrugged off her velvet jacket and retreated to the one end of the couch without a person in it. "So where ya from?" Xander asked attempting to make small talk.

"I travel alot but I was born in Seattle," she answered, glancing at Spike, wondering if she'd be more comfortable sitting on the stairs with him. When she noticed he was looking at her with a confused look on his face, she quickly looked away before a blush could engulf her face.

"Here, Serene," Giles said as he handed her a steaming cup and sat on the arm of the couch. "Mmmm, caffeine. Thanks, Gilesy, "she said, holding the cup with both hands and inhaling the steam.

"Gilesy?" Buffy asked, arching a dainty eyebrow at her Watcher.

"Umm.. Well, " Giles stammered, "Serene was my first assignment as a Watcher. She was young so I let her get away with it."

"I only did it to annoy you but now its a habit I just can't break," Serene said, smiling innocently. Spike chuckled and her smile widened.

"So why does she need a Watcher?" Willow asked, always inquisitive.

"You all know that Lilith was the first demon to possess a human creating a vampire," Giles said, waiting to make sure they all remembered. Spike zoned out, having heard the account numerous times within the quarter of a century that Angelus had been obsessed with the myth. 'Not a myth.' he told himself. He sat studying the petite girl sitting in the corner of the couch. Her hair was just long enough that it curled under her chin, shiny in its rich brown color. Her jeans were slightly baggy but couldn't hide the very feminine shape of her hips and her simple midnight blue t-shirt fit snug across her chest, where he could make out slight hint of lace that outlined her bra. A distinctly warm feeling started taking place in him that he hadn't had since before Dru left him. 'Snap out of it' he told himself forcing his mind back to what Giles was saying.

"Well, when the first Slayer was born, Lilith knew her end was before her, So, before the Slayer was of age, Lilith selected two pregnant women to carry the bloodline that one day she could return to. With sorcery she put all her knowledge of what was to come and the knowledge of each vampire and its children in their blood. After the children were born she turned the mothers into vampires to raise the children but the very first Watcher killed the demons. The Watcher raised the two girls along side the Slayer. As the children grew they realized what their destinies were. They knew one of their descendants would become the vessel for the demon Queen and bade the watchers to record and protect the prophesies along with the descendants. So for as long as Watchers have trained Slayers they have also protected the Descendants." Giles finished.

Throughout the whole explanation, Spike watched Serene. She had kept her head down, sipping her coffee and her eyes growing dark.

"So where's the other descendant?" Buffy asked.

"Dead, also," Serene answered without looking up from her cup.

"Helena's dead?" Giles asked, completely taken aback. "How?"

"Those fucking watchers somehow thought it was okay to keep us locked away. I escaped alot, as you remember, but Helena stayed put, never complained, never talked about a life beyond the days that blended together. She went mad, Giles. She watched the vamps in her head until she convinced herself that she wanted power, power to make everyone hurt the way we hurt, but I didn't fit into her plan. They never even suspected she would do anything, let alone have the strength to slaughter everyone in the safe house. She knocked me out before hand so I wasn't able to stop her. When I woke up she said I was practice, that I was wrong, that I wasn't worthy, too human, I didn't mean to, Giles. She was going to..." Serene couldn't finish. Her eyes had never left the cup that was shaking in her hands.

"Oh, God, Serene, I'm sorry." Giles said, reaching out and stroking her hair. Spike wanted to growl at Giles for having such intimate contact with her. 'She's a strong one. Not even a tear.' Spike thought as respect grew with the wanting he felt for her.

Serene smiled up at Giles. "Can't get rid of me that easy. You taught me too well, Gilesy." she said her grin widening.

"What happened then?" Buffy asked, respect and sorrow in her voice. Buffy remembered only to well how going through that felt. "I mean how did you end up here?"

"Well, after the fucking bastards realized something was wrong at the safe house, I'd only been fading in and out of consciousness for a few days. They decided after I was well enough to move to give me a new Watcher and send us to the middle of nowhere. That's when my new Watcher bit it." (Spike couldn't help but snicker at her choice of words.) "I knew the council was looking for me but I couldn't go back and Giles said if I ever needed help you guys were the ones to call." Serene said, smiling.

"Yeah, we're much better than the GhostBusters," Xander said, with his usual stupid humor. Serene giggled and Xanders goofy grin broadened. Buffy and Willow shot him dirty looks at his lame joke, while Giles rolled his eyes.

"What do you need help with?" Willow asked smiling, eager to help with a new project.

Serene's face grew dark. "It's almost time," she whispered so softly everyone had to strain to hear her.

"Serene, I don't know how to help you." Giles said sadly, "I haven't found what I need to figure out the prophecy. I've been trying all these years and after the council let me go, they took all my research materials on the Queen."

Serene looked at Buffy with sympathy in her eyes. "Angel has everything we need."

Chapter 3: Training

Buffy looked strickened. The last thing she wanted to do right now was call her ex-honey after her new honey had just called it quits. "Why is it that Angel always has the answer to everyones problems?" Xander muttered, jealousy tinting his voice.

"Xander !" Willow said sharply with enough force that Xander looked somewhat guilty. Serene smiled at the power play between the two friends.

"Between the knowledge Angel has on the subject and the books I smuggled to Wesley, we will have a better chance at figuring it out." Serene said.

"Wesley!" Giles exclaimed. "How?"

"He was assigned to me for awhile," she explained. "About the time I had him trained, they reassigned him!" Her lower lip stuck out slightly in a mock pout. Spike started having nasty thoughts again as he watched her playful teasing. 'She doesn't even realize what she's doing and that makes it all the more fun.' he thought, with a small smile on his lips.

"Trained?" Buffy said, snickering at the thought of Wesley being trained like a dog.

"About the time he figured out that I wouldn't escape so much if he just brought me cloves, mochas and truffles, they transferred him! I get so tired of escaping all the time." Serene said with a dramatic sigh.

They all laughed as she grinned at them. Spike just sat there watching her. He watched as her eyes would grow dark when she thought of something painful, the way her lips would slightly turn upward for a small delicious smile when something amused her, and the way her body slid gracefully underneath her clothes when she fidgeted. If anyone had been paying attention to him, they would have noticed his eyes almost pop out of his head when she raised her arms over her head and stretched causing her clothing to tighten in all the right places. 'Bloody fuckin Hell' Spike thought as he got up and went out the back door onto the small patio. He impatiently lit a cigarette and thought 'I shouldn't be thinking about her like that. She's just a girl and if she ever does become the Queen, she'd probably kill me for being such a nancy boy.' He was so busy thinking he didn't even hear her come up behind him.

"Do you have a light?" Serene asked. Spike turned around slowly. 'At least I saved myself the embarrassment of not jumping out of my skin.' he thought.

"Sure, pet," he answered, giving her a smile that nearly stopped her heart as he lit her clove. She inhaled and tried to smile back. 'He is just too beautiful. It's hard to not just stare. I mean look at the way his shirt hugs his chest. If his chest is that nice with clothes on...' His voice shocked her back out of her thoughts. "So, are they calling in the great poof to save the day?" Spike asked, a sneer forming.

"Be nice, Will. I need him here. I really don't have the urge to die before I've even lived," she said, with an edge in her voice that warned him not to argue.

"All right, I'll be a good boy," he grumbled.

Serene laughed. "Will, I don't think you've ever been good."

"I could show you how good I can be," Spike said, voice husky, looking her up and down. She looked in his eyes and felt a shiver run through her. 'His eyes are so blue, sky blue, and that smile is just too sexy. What am I thinking! I have other things that are more important to pay attention to than a gorgeous guy.'

Just then Willow came out onto the patio. "Giles just talked to them. They said it would take at least three hours to get here so the rest of us are going to go home and get some sleep. Giles said you could stay with him but if you want you could crash at the dorm with Buffy and me, Serene," Willow said.

"Thanks, Willow, but I think I'll stay here," Serene said giving the red head a smile.

"Kay, see you tomorrow. Bye, Spike." Willow said with a little wave. Serene followed her inside to say goodbye to the other two, leaving her clove sitting in the table. When she came back to finish it, her clove was still there but Spike was gone. She took a long drag, sighed, put it out and went back into the house.

Chapter 4: Chocolate cake and Fred Astaire

Spike quietly opened the front door, trying to be quiet so he wouldn't wake Giles and the girl. He shut the door behind him and caught the sound of the teley coming from the guest room. A smile spread across Spike's lips. "So the girl's a night owl. What luck.' He walked to the doorway and peeked in. Serene was lying on her stomach, on the bed, one pillow propping her up so her back was slightly arched. She was wearing silky purple boxers that rode up her thigh as she waved her feet in the air and a little black t-shirt that showed just a hint of her back. In her hand she held a Tootsie Pop, which she promptly stuck in her mouth, Spike watched the muscles in her neck work as she sucked on it. Spikes smile widened into a mischievous grin.

"Fixate much, luv?" Spike asked, stepping into the room. 'She didn't even have the decency to jump,' he thought.

"Jealous much, pet?" Serene threw back, with a smile as she licked the Tootsie Pop suggestively. Her smile widened as a look of discomfort crossed his face. 'Oh God, does that mean he is?' she thought, feeling her body flush at the thought. She sat the lollipop in its wrapper and sat up. Spike chuckled when he saw the front of her shirt, it said TEASE in big purple letters.

"Nice shirt, pet," he said, joining her on the bed. He handed her the small bag he'd been holding. "Here."

"What's this?" she asked suspiciously. She opened it and pulled out a box with ribbon tying it shut. Serene raised an eyebrow at him and he chuckled, a sexy low chuckle that made her heart almost skip a beat. She untied the box and inside was the most delicious looking piece of cake she'd ever seen, with ribbons of red raspberry and chocolate fudge and a sprinkling of crushed espresso beans. Her eyes met his and she smiled deeply into them.

"Gotcha trained already, huh?" she said. She giggled at the grumpy look on his face, which quickly changed to a smile at her giggles.

"Just thought I'd save myself the trouble of having to track your ass down after you escaped." Spike said, his eyes twinkling. 'Not that I'd mind chasing her cute ass down'

"Well, you didn't bring me any smokes so I might have to run away anyway," Serene said, laughter dancing in her eyes. 'Not that I'd mind him catching me."

Spike winked at her, gave her a heartbreakingly sexy smirk and handed her a fork. "So whatcha watching, pet?" he asked. She tore her eyes away from him to look back at the T.V.

"An old Fred Astaire movie" she answered, twirling the fork in her fingers. "I never understood what his appeal was, I mean, yeah, he could dance, but" Spike started, trying to turn his mind away from wanting to run his fingers through her hair and the urge to feel those soft, warm lips against his.

"Its the way he dances," Serene interrupted, "all that grace and confidence completely overshadows his looks. He knows what he wants and he always gets it in the end. Its totally sexy." She took a big bite of her cake and let out a little moan of ecstasy. Spike looked at her in surprise, she had her head tilted back, her eyes shut and a small smile upon her lips as she thoroughly savored every last crumb in her mouth. It took all of his self control not to throw her back and take her right then. His whole body felt flushed and weak when her eyes opened, looking straight into his. 'Her eyes are so dark, their like bottomless pits I really want to fall into," he thought. 'Lord, I'm turning into a bloody poof.' Just then the door bell rang, breaking the spell.

Chapter 5: ORDERS AND PROMISES

Serene jumped up with yelp to run to the door, leaving her cake sitting on the bed. She felt his eyes following her, then heard his feet do the same. 'God, he looked like he wanted to eat me up, but would that be a good or a bad thing?' She flushed at the thought. She stood at the door, regaining her composure before opening it.

"Hi, Angel," Serene said as she looked at the dark vampire, "I'm Serene." Angel had a look of astonishment on his face as he looked over her petite form. Spike, who was standing behind her, growled low in his throat as Angels eyes roamed. Serene bent her leg so that her heel tapped his shin.

"You promised, William," she said tilting her head back to look at him. His growl softened into something almost like a purr.

"Certainly, My Lady," Spike said softly into her ear, liking the way his breath tickled her neck. He could feel her shiver at the touch and he smiled. He raised his eyes from her neck and found himself looking straight into Angels glare.

"Making promises you can't keep already, Spike?" Angel said, his voice had an innocent sound to it that made the phrase doubly insulting.

"You'll make the same promise, Angel," Serene said, her tone cold and no nonsense. "As long as your here helping me, you'll leave Spike alone, got it?" She stared into Angels eyes and he could see the queen lurking in those brown pools.

"All right, I agree," he said, reluctantly.

"Giving orders already, Serene?" Wesley said, carrying an arm load of books.

"Of course, Wesley, how else would anything get done," she answered innocently, taking some books from him. Wesley chuckled, throwing a look at the two vampires. Spike smirked at Angel as he perched himself on a chair in the corner.

"It's good to see you, Serene," Wesley said, smiling.

"Likewise," she said.

Wesley pulled out a box from his coat pocket and handed it to her.

"Ooh, cloves. My favorite brand, too. Thanks, Wes," she said, giving him a big hug.

He awkwardly returned the hug. "Your more than welcome," he said, blushing.

"I wondered why you insisted on stopping at that smoke shop," Angel said, enjoying his friends embarrassment. "Where is everyone?"

"They decided to go home so they could put off seeing your ugly mug till a decent hour," Spike said, his smirk widening.

"William, I need a light," Serene said in a commanding tone as she walked out on to the patio. Spikes smirk disappeared as he followed her outside.

"As My Lady wishes," he said not bothering to hide the sarcasm in his voice.

"Does she have that effect on everyone?" Angel asked, confused by his childes behavior.

"Pretty much. Just wait till you make her mad, actually hope that never happens," Wesley answered, settling into the couch.

"Spike," she said, looking into his eyes, " this is hard enough for them without you making harder." Serene inhaled deeply as he lit her clove and continued. "Try to be the good boy you said you'd show me," she said in a slightly husky voice with that damn delicious smile.

"Alright," Spike said, giving her a pouty look. 'Why am I giving in to her ? I'm a stubborn son of a bitch but when she looks at me, I just want to do what will make her smile.' Serene giggled at his "poor me" face and once she'd started she couldn't stop. Spike raised an eyebrow at her when she'd calmed down, which only sent her into another fit of giggles. She'd try to calm down but the moment she would look at him again it would start all over again. At first Spike just looked at her in confusion, then started having fun with it. Whenever he saw her look toward him, he'd cross his eyes or stick out his tongue. Soon she was laughing so hard tears were leaking out from under her eyelids and her breath was short and strained. Spike reached out a hand and touched her arm.

His touch shocked her out of it and she calmed almost instantly .

"Sorry," she said, her cheeks flushed, "I kind if get hysterical when I haven't had enough sleep."

"When was the last time you slept?" Spike asked, trying to ignore her skin that was so warm under his hand.

"Oh, a couple of days ago," she answered, trying to ignore the almost searing cold of his hand on her arm.

Spike took a step closer to her. "Maybe you should go to bed, luv." He felt her warmth seeping into him and it was hard not to lose himself in it.

"Yeah, good idea," Serene said with hesitation in her voice. 'I wish he'd come with me.' She stepped out of his grasp and headed toward the door.

"Good night, William."

"Good night, My Lady," Spike whispered. He didn't move until he smelled dawn on the breeze.
